The Syndicate is now into its 2nd year of self management with Malcolm Moulden (Chair), Helen Eaton (Secretary) and Warren Barlow (Treasurer) tasked with providing the best possible service to the syndicate members and ensuring that Moonlight Shadow has a maintenance and improvement programme that keeps her in the best possible condition for the present and future members.
In the 2 years Moonlight Shadow has had a new engine, new prop, new cooker, upgraded upholstery and much more, with no increase in fees and for the past 2 years of winter maintenance, the management have been able to fund 100% of the fees and upgrades from existing funds with no need for further contributions from the syndicate members.
This is in stark comparison with many previous years of increased fees and many requests for syndicate members to contribute to winter maintenance and other upgrades.
We are currently saving around £3600 per year by being self managed and all these funds are not only benefiting Moonlight Shadow, but also the members.
Self management is proving to be great value for money!!!
Now that our boating year is starting up following winter maintenance, we thought it would be timely to provide you with an update of how the winter maintenance went.
Winter Maintenance
We are pleased to report that the winter maintenance has now been completed and the lounge reupholstered. The heads seals have been replaced. The exterior is also looking spic and span. The work went very smoothly and the liaison between the syndicate and HPC went really well.
Our Chairman, Malcolm visited the boat today to check out the upholstery and take photos for the website (which are now on our gallery). He also took the time to shampoo the carpets. (Thanks Malcolm.)
Prop
A new prop has been ordered. We expect that delivery of this will take up to 19 weeks, as investigations revealed MS was under propped. The excellent news is that HPC have said that, once the new prop is in stock, it can be installed during our Friday turnaround slot, rather than having to wait for a vacant week or impinging on anyone's boating time.
Work for next year
We are now working up a list of further improvements which include the blue band around the hull which is tired in places, where the hull has struck the quay heading in areas not protected by the fenders . Other works that we would like to schedule for next year include a re-upholster of headboards etc. and new curtains. We will also work to get some quotes for a kitchen refit for the next AGM.
So huge thanks for the staff at HPC for their efforts and the syndicate members for their continued support to the plans to ensure Moonlight Shadow is in the best possible condition.
The members held their 2022 AGM where self management was on the agenda and it was great to receive such a positive response by all as we already see the benefits of self management, with greater control of maintenance, servicing and upgrades to Moonlight Shadow and additional funds being made available to carry out such work.
We have already commissioned Jeckells to carryout upgrades to the Upholstery, a review of the electrics, a review of the prop, a reconditioned gearbox to add to the recently fitted engine making Moonlight Shadow one of the best of its kind on the broads.
Much of this work will be conducted over the coming weeks and and MS is taken out of the water in February for her winter maintenance
We are committed to making improvements and enhancements whilst reducing costs for the syndicate members and this focus is warmly received by them all.
